Seeking Asylum: Then and Now with Rory Kennedy and Scott Miller

In-Person / Online

In response to COVID-19 and in an effort to keep our guests safe, this event will be held on Zoom.

UCI Libraries invites you to spend the evening with documentary filmmaker, Rory Kennedy, and former Director of Curatorial Affairs at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Scott Miller. Drawing parallels between the historic impact of the asylum-seeking voyage of the MS St. Louis in 1939, and the modern-day refugee crisis around the globe, this discussion will be moderated by Tatiana Bryant, UCI Libraries Research Librarian for Digital Humanities, History, and African American Studies. The MS St. Louis, carrying Jews fleeing Nazi Germany, was turned away by Cuba and the United States, forcing its passengers to return to Europe. 254 of those passengers would later die in the Holocaust.

Rory Kennedy is one of America’s most prolific documentary filmmakers, and an Academy Award-nominated, Primetime Emmy Award-winning director/producer of more than 40 highly acclaimed documentaries. Her latest project will tell the story of the MS St. Louis

Distinguished speaker, Scott Miller, is the former Director of Curatorial Affairs at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), Washington DC, and coauthor of the book Refuge Denied: The St. Louis Passengers and the Holocaust.
